It’s the time of year when recreational sport fishing in Alaska really takes off again.
Here are a few photos of a recreational fishing trip I made with friends two years ago.
Here we are with hands full of yelloweye.
Here we are with some rock fish or “black beauty” as they are affectionately referred to among local Kenai Peninsula.
Where did we go sport fishing in Alaska? On the Kenai Peninsula. That’s all I can tell you.
I the fall you can also fish for halibut, lingcod, and some salmon. That is an excellent Alaska fishing trip.

I grilled all of it. I ate through my share in a week. Yelloweye is my favorite fish. Delicious.

What does it taste like? Is it a fatty fish? I was thinking it looked like a snapper and found out…it was. I don’t think I’ve ever had snapper. I’m more a salmon and freshwater eel girl.

It’s light and flaky. I have had fish in Quintana Roo that is similar. Do you eat much in the way of eels where you are now?

No. Sadly not. I only ever eat it when I’m back home in California, where I can find really well prepared unagi. Oh, my mouth is watering just thinking about it!
I think the fish you are referring to is tikin xic, which is basted with adobo and achiote, all wrapped up and earth-baked. Good stuff. Really popular here. With roasted habanero sauce, it is to die for! Never was much of a spicy food person until I came to Mexico and I’d have to say that habaneros are the best!

Well the Yucatan is certainly the height of culinary expression in Mexico, sorry d.f.. I have visited some places out west where the only thing to eat is a salchicha or a huevo on a medium with equal parts mayo and ketchup.
Unagi. Hell ya. Thats the stuff.

Before you go back to DF (if you ever go), talk to me. I will give you a list of all the places with good eating. And I’m not talking about snooty, high brow fare (though I know some as well). I’m talking hole-in-the-wall, local hot spots.
Hey, I was a starving student when I was there. I know where it’s at!
And yes, what I would do for a nice unagi on a bed of rice, that comes from a Japanese rice paddy. Kokuho Rose has nothing on it!

I do, actually. Are you going to send it to me? I would make a TON of pasties on Seward’s Day, if you do!
