An encounter with a sea lion at the men’s room on a day trip to San Cristobal Island, Galápagos Islands. Our guide said to go use the bathroom and be back in 5 minutes. Most of us had no experience with sea lion encounters in the men’s room. What to do? None of us could imagine it would be ferocious like in other places on earth but still it was a two legged sea dog with teeth.
With men exiting the bathroom she decided to take off.
Pretty cool. A real Galápagos Islands travel experience. A sure sign of how much fun the rest of the day would be when we went swimming with sea lions.
Lot’s more about the Galápagos Islands and Ecuador coming soon.
Safe travels,
Mike
If you’re going swimming with these guys later it’s good they wash up first. Better than some of the people who use my pool. Cheers ! Look forward to more.

Absolutely. Don’t be share to shy that it. As you can imagine we were all standing there with our hands in pockets looking at each other and wondering what to do.

Our experience with sea lions was that they didn’t give much quarter, and the males blocking a path can be a bit aggressive.

We just threw empty budweiser cans at them. Works every time ;>)

I wonder what the males would have done had the cans been full…

Having experienced male sealions around the Ballestas Is (couldn’t afford Galapagos) as a tour guide, they can get pretty damned obstreperous; and 300kgs of stroppy sealion is not to be taken lightly. If it came to a matter of survial, political correctness would have gone right out the window. But, yes, I did realise your remark was in jest, hence my reply.

I only encountered a few bulls while in the islands. I tend to avoid testosteroney males of any species.

I was really lucky to have the quick draw camera reflex that day because that episode was so short. I am always impressed by photographers that capture these moments in focus and with proper exposure….

How very Galapagos! 🙂 I worked with sea lions in a rehab setting and was constantly surprised by how strong (& strong-willed!) they are.

Yeah, life is so cool there. I am still not recovered. Where did you do rehab?

Marine Mammal Care Center at Fort MacArthur in California. It was a really great experience.

I bet. I am not much of a mammal guy but that was an amazing experience I had. Most of my previous up close experiences with marine mammals was eating them.
